Late: ISTD Submission

An introduction to the world
of publication
Before I began ISTD in 2024, I hadn't really explored book design, publication or editorial during my time at university. I'd always been interested in typography, but this had mostly manifested in brand identity projects, so ISTD was the perfect time to tackle a publication brief.

When choosing my topic for ISTD, I wanted to explore an area I had a passion for
I've always been active and interested in women's and human rights campaigns, so I chose to do this project on reproductive rights in the UK and US. Such a heavy and contentious topic required the right tone of voice and visual communication, so I did research into existing publications in this area and found that they were all fairly similar; I wanted my outcome to have a fresh look and a fresh perspective.

I wanted the typography to convey the message without being too demonstrative
I wanted to use type to convey a sense of gravity, disruption, time, order and disorder without being too 'on the nose'. This was a difficult balance—the book had over 20 versions and iterations until it was complete (R.I.P to my macbook storage), but I didn't want to hand something to ISTD until I was happy.
