The self-initiated brief for my major project unit at university was completely open. I chose to do my project on the subject of language and how learning foreign languages can be the key to bridging cultural divides and encouraging tolerance and inclusion.

A commentary on language

and how foreign languages are approached in the UK. The series of three books that I designed and produced for my Final Major Project discusses the current state of division and nationalism in Britain, proposing a more tolerant and embracing view of other cultures through engagement with other languages.

The books are split into three distinct themes

Book 1 tackles nationalism, monolingualism and anglocentrism in Britain, showing readers how much of English is made of other languages (you're already speaking a foreign language, you just didn't know it).

Book 2 discusses the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and how the language you speak informs the way you experience the world. Finally, book 3 exhibits words from other languages that don't have an equivalent in English, encouraging readers to fall in love with the quirks and intricacies of different languages.

More than the sum of its parts

I used dots as a running motif throughout the books as I wanted to visually represent that just like English is made up of lots of small parts of other languages, Britain—and the world—is made up of many cultures; the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
